Nature's Cure for ADHD

For people diagnosed with ADHD, typically prescription medication is the doctor’s suggestion. While there are a number of medications on the market, the three most commonly prescribed include Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta. Each of these helps to calm the individual down while cooling many of the ADHD symptoms. However, most prescription medications used for treating ADHD also come with a long list of side effects. Some of these are minor while others are more serious. Because of this, we see more and more people looking at options of natures cure for ADHD. If you or your child has recently been diagnosed with ADHD and dread taking prescription medication, then you might consider looking at natures cure for ADHD.
Rather than suffer from impairment in language, memory, perception, motor skills, conceptualization, and of course, hyperactivity, you have options other than standard drugs. For starters when looking at natures cure for ADHD, you need to think about diet. Too often, people with ADHD are misdiagnosed. The result can lead to a diet low in magnesium or one too dependent on carbohydrates. When living with ADHD, proper diet is essential to feeling well and being able to cope with life. Therefore, your first natures cure for ADHD is to eat a diet that is high in protein, moderate fat, and low carbohydrate. Make sure you eat plenty of dark leafy vegetables and stay away from caffeine.
Next, natures cure for ADHD involves food, the right food. You want to avoid foods that can enhance the hyperactivity, which would be food additives. Numerous studies have been performed showing that as much as 50% of all hyperactive children have sensitivity to artificial food colors, flavors, and preservatives, something we see in the majority of food sold in grocery stores today. For this reason, we highly recommend you change the entire family’s eating habits to make it easier on the one person with ADHD by cooking good, old-fashioned home-cooked meals. This requires a little planning and time but the results will be noticeable and worth it. Again, stick with meals consisting of lean meat, dark, leafy vegetables, more fresh fruit, low carbohydrates, avoid white sugar, rice, and flour, etc.
A new study regarding light deficiency has been conducted showing that there could be a connection between a lack of natural light in the schools today and children with ADHD. Considering that currently as much as 5% of all school age children have ADHD, it sure makes you wonder why. Most schools use fluorescent lighting, which now show indication of being a problem. While you will probably not get your child’s school to change out the entire school’s lighting system, you can make sure your child spends quality time outdoors in natural sunlight. Instead of playing on the computer, watching television, or playing video games take him or her to the park, play catch or Frisbee in the yard, or go with your child to take the dog for a walk.
Finally, natures cure for ADHD could be as simple as taking the right supplements to help with nutrition. As an example, in many studies, it has been identified that boys with ADHD have noted reduced levels of omega-3 essential fatty acid DHA. Other studies show that 95% of all ADHD children tested had a deficiency in magnesium. Then, most children with ADHD have reduced levels of zinc. Consider that the cell membranes and synaptic endings of the neurons in the brain and nervous system are made from DHA, which is omega-3 fatty acid. Unless these membranes are protected by antioxidants, they become stale. Most people do not get enough DHA whereas other types of fats are absorbed into the brain, meaning it does not work very well. Then, neurotransmitters, which are made by the body from dietary sources, can only function well if they are getting adequate amounts of magnesium, zinc, Vitamin C, and B vitamins. If the person with ADHD is not getting the nutrition needed by the brain for it to function effectively, ADHD symptoms are overwhelming. Therefore, another important natures cure for ADHD is nutrition, which can be received in both food and supplements.
